Liquid distortion effects

After Effects includes a vast array of Distort effects, both native and third-party plug-in, for distorting morphing an image. The Warp effects include the ability to correct or stabilize images with Rolling Shutter distortion. The Bezier Warp effect shapes an image using a closed Bezier curve along the boundary of a layer. The curve consists of four segments. Each segment has three points a vertex and two tangents. Andrew Kramer provides a video tutorial on his Video Copilot website that demonstrates the use of the Bezier Warp effect.

The positions of the vertices and tangents determine the size and shape of a curved segment.

Dragging these points reshapes the curves that form the edge, thus distorting the image. For example, you can use Bezier Warp to reshape one image to fit another, as in wrapping a label around a jar. Bezier Warp is also useful for correcting lens aberrations, such as the fisheye effect barrel distortion that can occur with a wide-angle lens; using Bezier Warp, you can bend the image back to achieve an undistorted look.

By animating the effect and choosing a high quality setting, you can create fluid visual effects, such as a jiggling gelatin dessert or a fluttering flag. The Bulge effect distorts an image around a specified point, making the image appear to bulge toward or away from the viewer, depending on the options you select.

Horizontal Radius and Vertical Radius. The width and height of the distorted area, in pixels. You can also set the radius values by dragging the selection handles in the layer. The apparent depth of the bulge. Positive values push the bulge toward the viewer.

Texture Distortion

Negative values pull the bulge away from the viewer. The shallowness of the sides of the bulge. A taper radius of 0 produces a steep, pronounced bulge. The amount of edge smoothing blending of colors at the boundaries of the bulge. Anti-aliasing is applied only when the layer quality is set to Best. The Corner Pin effect distorts an image by repositioning each of its four corners. Use it to stretch, shrink, skew, or twist an image or to simulate perspective or movement that pivots from the edge of a layer, such as a door opening.

You can also use it to attach a layer to a moving rectangular region tracked by the motion tracker. You can move the corner pins in the Composition panel, the Timeline panel, or the Effect Controls panel. The AE Enhancers forum describes and links to an animation preset from Donat van Bellinghen for scaling a set of Corner Pin effect points. The Minibar is a liquid analyser pedal, a truly revolutionary stompbox that uses the properties of a liquid to decide the sound of your guitar!

Rainger FX are inviting you to take part in an experiment in tone-shaping discovery…. This mini-pedal makes no sound at all until you pour liquid into it — any kind at all — and the various qualities of that liquid decide the amount — and to some degree the quality — of the distortion, and also the amount of treble and bass.

What you use to do this is entirely up to you — any sort of mixture you can dream up! The pedal is simplicity itself; it has a volume knob, and a small watertight container mounted in the top panel; unscrew the lid, get pouring — and analyse! To start again with experimenting, just open the lid and wipe out the container with a paper towel. Note; the pedal is sold with no liquid in it, and so will make no noise at all — until you do your bit!

In this case, it's done by using a flow map to distort a texture. This tutorial assumes you've gone through the Basics series, plus the Rendering series up to at least part 6, Bumpiness. This tutorial is made with Unity When a liquid doesn't move, it is visually indistinguishable from a solid.

Are you looking at water, jelly, or glass? Is that still pool frozen or not? To be sure, disturb it and observe whether it deforms, and if so how. Merely creating a material that looks like moving water isn't enough, it actually has to move. Otherwise it's like a glass sculpture of water, or water frozen in time. That's good enough for a picture, but not for a movie or a game. Most of the time, we just want a surface to be made out of water, or mud, or lava, or some magical effect that visually behaves like a liquid.

It doesn't need to be interactive, just appear believable when casually observed. So we don't need to come up with a complex water physics simulation. All we need is some movement added to a regular material.

This can be done by animating the UV coordinates used for texturing. For this tutorial, you can start with a new project, set to use linear color space rendering. If you're using Unityselect the default 3D pipeline, not lightweight or HD. Then create a new standard surface shader. As we're going to simulate a flowing surface by distorting texture mapping, name it DistortionFlow.

Below is the new shader, with all comments and unneeded parts removed. To make it easy to see how the UV coordinates are deformed, you can use this test texture. Create a material that uses our shader, with the test texture as its albedo map. Set its tiling to 4 so we can see how the texture repeats. Then add a quad to the scene with this material. That makes it easy to look at it from any angle.

The code for flowing UV coordinates is generic, so we'll put it in a separate Flow. It should return the new flowed UV coordinates. We begin with the most straightforward displacement, which is simply adding the time to both coordinates. Then use the new UV coordinates to sample our texture. As we're increasing both coordinates by the same amount, the texture slides diagonally. Because we adding the time, it slides from top right to bottom left. And because we're using the default wrap mode for our texture, the animation loops every second.

The animation is only visible when the time value increases. This is the case when the editor is in play mode, but you can also enable time progression in edit mode, by enabling Animated Materials via the Scene window toolbar. Actually, the time value used by materials increases each time the editor redraws the scene.

So when Animated Materials is disabled you will see the texture slide a bit each time you edit something. Animated Materials just forces the editor to redraw the scene all the time. So only turn it on when you need it.

Automatically reach out to fans based on how they behave. The main concept of this demo is to use a displacement map in order to distort an underlying image, giving it different types of effects.

What a displacement map generally does, is using an image as a texture, that is later applied to an object, giving the illusion that the underlying object is wrapped around that texture. In order to have a displacement effect, you need a displacement map texture.

A general rule of thumb is that your texture image should be a power of 2 sized texture. What this means is that its width and height can be doubled-up or divided-down by 2. This ensures that your texture is optimized to run fast, without consuming too much memory.

Our base markup for this demo is really minimal. We just need the navigation buttons for our slider and a wrapper for the slides. We use this wrapper to pass our slides to our component, therefore we hide it by default with CSS.

This markup to JS approach may simplify the task of adding images to the slideshow, when working in a more dynamic environment. However, if it suits you better, you could just easily pass them as an array, upon initializing.

In our CSS we hide our wrapper and position the navigation buttons at the left and right edges of the viewport. The idea is fairly simple: we add all of our slides into a container, apply the displacement filter and render. Next thing we want to do is handle the clicks of the navigation buttons. Like we said, when the user clicks on the next or previous button, we change the alpha property of the according slide and tweak our Displacement Filter.

We use a simple timeline for this, which you could of course customize accordingly. This should sum up the most basic parts of how the demo works and give you a good starting point if you want to edit it according to your needs. So just include the script on your page and add the following code wherever you want to show your slideshow. Last thing we want to do is optionally make our stage interactive.

That is instead of auto playing, have our effect interact with our mouse. Just set the the interactive property to be true and play around with your mouse.

In all mouse interactions we listen for the corresponding event, and based on the event data, we scale our displacement event respectively. It looks like this:. Simple as that! Hope this demo gives you a good starting point to play around with different filters and make it easy for you to create your own.
